This class will focus on developing your confidence and help you achieve new levels of artistry.

Lessons will include brushwork, values, color blending, and textures. We will experiment with a variety of approaches in portraiture. There will be special emphasis on design elements and creative development, from background to a finished painting. Watercolor painting experience is suggested, but not necessary.

Students must purchase the following supplies:

  • Pthalo Blue or Ultramarine Blue
  • Pyrole Red or Alizarin Crimson
  • Permanent Yellow or Aureolin
  • Burnt Umber
  • Burnt Sienna*
  • Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue, or Winsor Blue
  • Permanent Rose or Winsor Red
  • Hanza Yellow Light or Indian yellow
  • Sap Green
  • Winsor Green
  • Raw Sienna
  • Permanent Orange
  • Permanent Violet
  • Paynes Gray

*Palette: A PIKE palette or Quiller palette has all of the color wells you will need, with a large area for mixing paint. A white Styrofoam plate will also work.


Arches 140lb cold press is recommended. 2 to 3 sheets (22 x 28) or pad
( 8.5″ x 11″ or 10″ x 14″ size)

Brushes (I use soft synthetic/natural watercolor brushes):

  • 1 x  1/2″ or 1′ Flat 1 – #8 round
  • 1 x  #12 or #14 round

Extra Items:

  • Roll of paper towels
  • Small sponge for texture
  • Plastic wrap Spray bottle/mister
  • Small set of watercolor pencils or a small set of Caran d’Ache Neocolor II crayons
  • Artist tape A piece of gator board or foam core to tape your paper
  • Salt: Course Kosher salt works great
  • Graphite pencil
  • Masking fluid and small disposable brush.
    -Winsor Newton or Pebeo is recommended. Make sure it is lightly tinted, so it can be seen on white paper
  • Small container of liquid soap
  • Carbon paper: Mona Lisa or Saral (graphite color)
  • Water container
